Best pubs in Bath

The "Hall & Woodhouse Bath" in Bath, England, is a stylish gastro-pub and restaurant that has established itself as a popular meeting point in the heart of the historic city. It belongs to the esteemed Hall & Woodhouse family brewery, known for its award-winning Dorset beers and warm hospitality for over 235 years. The building, a former auction house, was transformed into a four-story venue in 2010, offering a mix of vintage-inspired charm and modern elegance. It is conveniently located near attractions such as the Roman Baths and the Jane Austen Centre, making it an ideal stop for visitors and locals looking to enjoy a relaxing meal or drink.

Dog friendly restaurants in Bath

The interior of the "Hall & Woodhouse Bath" is impressively versatile. The ground floor, known as "The Pantry," has a laid-back pub atmosphere with cozy seating and an open fireplace that invites guests to linger. The restaurant area on the first floor provides a more elegant setting with an open kitchen where guests can watch the chefs at work. Notably, the rooftop terrace, with its stunning views over the rooftops of Bath, is a highlight—perfect for cocktails at sunset or lunch on warm days. Another private dining room, "The Pavilion," is available for special occasions or business meetings. The pub is dog-friendly, but only in certain areas, and provides a welcoming atmosphere for families, friends, and even solo travelers.

Traditional British cuisine

The menu pays tribute to British cuisine with a modern twist, placing great emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. The Sunday Roast is particularly popular, featuring tender beef served with fluffy Yorkshire puddings, crispy roast potatoes, and homemade gravy— a dish that consistently delights guests. The Beer Battered Fish & Chips also receive high praise, boasting a crispy coating and juicy fish that perfectly complements the thick chips. For a sweet finish, the Sticky Toffee Pudding stands out, a warm, caramel dessert that is truly indulgent with its rich sauce. The beverage selection is equally impressive, featuring a wide range of Badger beers from Dorset, as well as a creative cocktail menu and a selection of fair-trade coffees.

Rooftop terrace with view over Bath

Service is often described as warm and attentive, with staff eager to provide guests with a pleasant experience—whether through beer recommendations or a friendly greeting. However, on busy days, such as Sundays or during the tourist season, it can get crowded, and some visitors report longer wait times or increased noise levels. The option to order via an app streamlines the process and is utilized by many, especially when the rooftop terrace is busy.

Historic attractions in Bath

Guest experiences are predominantly positive, with the unique architecture, quality of the food, and spectacular views from the rooftop terrace often praised. There are occasional critiques: some feel that food on hectic days may not always be consistent, such as being served lukewarm, or complain that portions do not always meet expectations. Nonetheless, the overall impression is that the "Hall & Woodhouse Bath" is a reliable spot suitable for both a quick drink and a leisurely meal. It has earned a reputation as one of the best pubs in Bath and was even named one of the top ten addresses in the city by Vogue.

A special aspect of the restaurant is its connection to the history and culture of Bath. The building itself, with its spiral staircase and grand glass roof, tells its own story, while its proximity to the city's main attractions makes the visit even more appealing. It is also a venue for celebrations, offering specials like Mother’s Day treats that surprise guests with small gifts. For families, there are child-friendly activities like coloring sets, and the dog-friendly policy ensures that four-legged friends are also welcome.

I thought Ella who served us really made the meal. She was so sweet and attentive. As soon as I wanted a little extra (butter) I only had to raise my eye, and she was over at the table. I credit her for making our lunch feel like a special occasion. Thank you Ella!

Very busy Saturday, took ages to get service at our table. The meat in the burgers was cold, chewy and dry. The fries were too thin and not properly cooked. Other diners had fish and chips, but the fish tasted old and the batter was soggy. Except for the slow initial ordering, the service was good. Not a good experience at all, saved only by the people we had lunch with.
